Director Barry Levinson’s (Rain Man, Good Morning Vietnam) found footage horror film The Bay centers on a small Chesapeake Bay town where an unprecedented biological disaster is unleashed from the bay’s waters. The combination of Alien body horror, Paranormal Activity live action shock effects and a back story that brings in the military and CDC to deal with this man-made (?) or naturally created (?) horror looks queasily effective. The last few moments that hints at a zombie apocalypse evolution– not so much.
The best thing about British heist movies for American audiences is that figuring out WTF they say adds to the mystery of WTF is going on. The Wasteland trailer is a great case in point. The only intelligible words to my ears are Steven Roper. The rest looks like an elaborate con within a con setup to get back at Steven Roper. The slick look and a cast of unknowns doing some fine character acting wants me to wrestle with the brogues once this thriller hits our gentle shores.
